Aldine High School Mustangs Tennis

The Aldine High School tennis program, led by Head Coach Floyd Mayne, is a competitive program within the Aldine Independent School District (AISD) that
emphasizes both athletic excellence and family/community support. The team, known as the Mustangs, has a strong presence in the UIL District 14-6A, recently qualifying several athletes for regional championships.

Key Team Information

Head Coach: Floyd Mayne leads the Boys and Girls tennis programs at Aldine High School.

Athletic Coordinator: Charles Trey Brown oversees the campus athletic programs.

Recent Success: The girls’ tennis team recently captured a district championship, and 14 student-athletes from across the district, including Aldine High representatives, advanced to the UIL Region II 6A Tennis Championships in Waco.

Facilities: Matches and practices are held at the Aldine Senior High School Tennis Courts, which feature four well-maintained outdoor courts located at
11201 Airline Dr, Houston, TX.

Program Expectations and Support

The “tennis family” atmosphere at Aldine is built on a foundation of high participation, strong work ethics, and parent involvement.

Academic Requirements: Student-athletes must maintain at least a “C” average in regular courses and a “B” average in AP or Dual Credit classes to remain
eligible.

Community Service: Students are encouraged to complete 25+ hours of community service to earn graduation cords, reinforcing a commitment to service beyond the court.

Family Involvement: The Aldine ISD Athletics Department explicitly highlights that support and encouragement from family and friends are vital to a student’s
success and self-esteem.

At Aldine High School, Mustang Tennis is built on competition, character, and commitment to team success. The following guidelines outline how players are evaluated and placed within our program.

Challenge matches are one of several tools used to determine the team line-up during both fall and spring seasons.

  • Challenges will typically occur weekly (unless adjusted by the coach).
  • Players in even-numbered positions challenge up, while odd-numbered players defend. This rotates each week.
  • Players who continue to win will move up the ladder without defending
  • Final decisions are always based on coach’s discretion, including:
    • Attitude (on and off the court)
    • Academic performance
    • Work ethic and effort
    • Preparedness
    • Sportsmanship

Team First Mentality:
While competition is important, team unity comes first. Mustang Tennis emphasizes respect, trust, and supporting one another. Our goal is to compete as one team against other schools, not against each other.

  • Doubles teams are selected by the coaching staff
  • Pairings are based on:
    • Skill compatibility
    • Communication and teamwork
    • Strategic strengths
  • Players may be rotated in or out based on performance and team needs.
  • Tryouts (if needed) will be held during the first week of school
  • Open to students not currently enrolled in the tennis class.
  • Placement into Freshmen, JV, or Varsity is based on:
    • Match play
    • Coach evaluation

Requirements:

  • Completed physical on file

Proper equipment provided by the player

  • Athletes finishing another sport may schedule a tryout
  • Placement is based on coach evaluation only
  • Once placed, players may enter the challenge system
  • All 9th graders may participate in Freshmen Tennis (no tryout required)
  • Evaluation throughout the year will determine readiness for:  JV or Varsity (sophomore year)
  • Players with advanced experience (USTA, tournaments, camps) may be:
    • Placed directly into JV or Varsity
  • Placement is based on coach assessment of ability and readiness
  • Seniors are given priority consideration in varsity positions.
  • If a senior competes evenly (approx. 50%) with a sub-varsity player:
    • The senior may retain their varsity position
  • Coaches determine when it is appropriate to move a younger player ahead.

Seniors can only compete at Varsity, while underclassmen have developmental levels available.

A Varsity Letter is earned by:

  • Being enrolled in the Varsity Tennis class, OR
  • Participating in the program for 7 consecutive semesters

Coach’s Philosophy:
Earning a letter is not just about performance—it represents:

  • Character
  • Commitment
  • Leadership
  • Academic responsibility

Mustang Tennis players are expected to represent Aldine High School with pride both on and off the court.

Compete with purpose. Represent with pride. Win as a team.
